The Irregular CorporationItalic Pig and Northern Ireland Screen have just joined forces on a Jurassic journey of prehistoric proportions to kick off production on the definitive dinosaur ranching game you never knew you were waiting for. To get the first important question out of the way… Yes! You CAN pet the dinos!

WHAT WE CAN TELL YOU SO FAR

 

 

Paleo Pines is a casual social/management sim where players can become dinosaur ranchers. In a wholesome, friendly environment, dozens of dinosaur species are befriended, cared for and ridden into the wild to search for more and expand the ranch. It was first conceived at Global Game Jam by concept artist Jordan Bradley:

I was tired of dinosaurs always being portrayed in film as ‘monsters’. I thought, surely I can’t be the only one who just wants to pet one on the nose!

Jordan posted several of her concept drawings on Twitter, and they instantly gained a tremendous following.

Far from movie monsters, the dinosaurs in the game are adorably-stylised versions of real dinosaur species, and all of them are pettable, ridable, and lovable. In this adorable game you can:

  • Turn neglected meadows into bountiful dinosaur pastures
  • Explore vast wild worlds
  • Tame and care for new friends
  • Befriend townsfolk
  • Encounter amazing creatures and boop their noses!

The majority of the development for ​Paleo Pines​ will take place in Northern Ireland at Italic Pig studios in Holywood, County Down. Italic Pig has ramped up its team to more than double the size to recruit new 3D artists, riggers and programmers from throughout the UK, bringing them to Northern Ireland for the duration of the 18-month production. It is hoped that the team will continue to grow following on from a successful launch expected in 2021.

EGX was murderous this year…in a good way. That’s because it was the first time that the team behind the spanking new game from Mediatonic and The Irregular Corp went out amongst the masses to tell everyone the origin story Murder by Numbers.

 

In case you didn’t hear, the game stars Honor Mizrahi an actress on a hit TV detective show. When her boss ends up dead just minutes after he fires her, she finds herself starring in her own murder mystery. Teaming up with SCOUT, a reconnaissance robot thrown away after a mysterious incident, she sets out to clear her name – and a new detective duo is born!

The game’s characters are designed by Hato Moa, who also designed characters for and created Hatoful Boyfriend. Those of you who are fans of the iconic Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney series will also be happy to know that the soundtrack is to be composed by Ace Attorney composer Masakazu Sugimori. It’s fair to say that EGX is one of the biggest events on the games calendar for both those working in the industry and fans. It definitely doesn’t feel like a year has gone by since the last time we were all there. This year the TIC and MT team went in waves to meet fans, catch up with partners and get hands-on time with all the other wonderful games that are showcased there. 

Every year it feels as if the indie zones of these events expand more and more and it’s really wholesome to see more indie games get the spotlight and be accessible for players to try out. As usual, EGX offers a lot for attendees and folk working the event when they have some downtime. Here at The Irregular Corp we’re always on the lookout for new and exciting indie games to support. One of the main reasons The Irregular Corporation and Mediatonic were excited about this years convention was a lovely panel featuring Ed Fear and Luke Borrett who are part of the team responsible for bringing Murder By Numbers to life.

Hosted by Katharine Castle from Rock Paper Shotgun the panel entitled “East meets West: Game Dev Collaboration Across Continents” delved into the collaborative efforts between Japanese creators and those based in the west.  It also revealed the origin story of Murder by Numbers, the inspirations and the journey that’s ahead for this game.

While EGX was happening on the other side of London another event with even scarier queue lines was going down at the limited Pokémon Pop-Up store at Westfield. 

There were whispers of queues that wrapped around the giant shopping complex, the wind echoed “9hr queues folks omg” and all of that was very very true. People genuinely queued from 4am until nighttime in order to get their hands on some squishy cute Pokémon merch, primarily the special London edition of Pikachu and the first grab of the new starters for Sword and Shield.

So that was a heavy intense exhilarating week for the entire group here. We met a lot of people, we received a ton of great feedback and love for Murder by Numbers and what we do in general which warmed our hearts. We’re ready to crack on with more intriguing and exciting announcements…
